York to the Power of 50

GlendonIn 2009, York celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Fifty years ago a dream began.  A vision of bringing together researchers, teachers, students and partners from different disciplines to address the complex challenges of tomorrow.  Striving to achieve our vision to become a leading international centre for interdisciplinary teaching and research, York has always looked for answers along unconventional paths.

It all began when Murray G. Ross assumed the first presidency of York University.  With York, Ross set out to create a different type of institution for higher learning in Canada.  He believed in a university that provided everyone the opportunity of improving their life through education.  By the end of his term in 1970, York was firmly established as a high quality degree-granting university with thousands of students on both the Glendon and Keele Campuses.

Vari Hall InteriorNow 50 years later we've grown to become Canada's third largest University with over 200,000 alumni and 50,000 students.  Throughout the years, we have produced many of the country's top leaders in the fields of law, politics, literature, philosophy, fine arts, journalism, business and science.

We're very excited about York to the Power of 50 anniversary celebration and have planned a year of special initiatives to celebrate our 50th.  Keep checking our website to learn more about what the anniversary year has to offer.

With half a century of spectacular growth, we are now in a position to achieve that vision and become a leading international centre for interdisciplinary research and teaching. Imagine what can be accomplished in the next 50 years!
